from Top Ten Reasons to Attend the CWILL BC Walking Read Gala in June
REASON NUMBER TWO: WE’RE 20!
Can you believe it’s been 20 years since a small group of us met in Sonia
Craddock’s (RIP) living room to discuss starting our own writers’ and
illustrators’ group, separate from CANSCAIP? Well, it has, and that deserves a
And what a group we are. Nearly 150 strong, from every region of the province.
We have collectively produced over 2,000 books. We write and illustrate in every
genre including graphic novels, plays, screenplays, YA, fiction, non-fiction,
picture books, chapter books and even science kits. Our books have been
translated into at least 20 languages.
That’s just the statistics. The important thing is that for 20 years we have
been supporting one another, sharing tips and advice, celebrating each other’s
successes, consulting one another on presentations and fees and publishers and
agents and editors, elevating our professional development through speakers and
master classes, helping each other become better creators and better promoters.
And what other writers’ organization do you know in which younger members

longer-in-the-tooth members [read: me] step aside?
We’re worth celebrating. Let’s party!
